Chunks of Life and Weather News

It’s been a while, so this letter is in CHUNKS of time, weather, and adventures.

March 23,2023: For us in Colorado it’s been snow, then rain, then beautiful sunshine . . . then rain, snow, then another beautiful day. It’s called SPRINGTIME IN THE ROCKIES. I love it! Today is a beautiful day and my Hiker Ladies group is heading up Ute Valley . . . with Yaktrax on!

April 27, 2023

The weather is still bouncing around and Robert and I are in an emotionally bouncy time also since we made the decision to change out all our 20-year-old house carpets. OMG! It’s like moving! You pack and move everything from one part of the house . . . like the whole upstairs. Then you move to the whole next area . . . like downstairs.

Next these nice guys show up and move all the furniture. They cut and pound for several days while you try to find a place to sleep since your bed is gone, and stay out of their way, yet still be available to answer questions. Of course we worked hard using our 80-year-old memories to try to keep track of where basic things were. We found ourselves asking: “Now which box did I put my toothbrush in?” . . . “How about my shoes?” Argg!

So now they have finished. The furniture is moved back in place. Robert and I are slowly going through one box at a time: “Do I keep this? Or give it to someone? Or take it to Goodwill?”

Boxes to unpack

Robert’s daughter, Jenny, and, next week, her son, Zayden, have been wonderful with showing up to help haul boxes from downstairs to upstairs and from one area to another. Robert has been careful not to lift anything and throw his back out. I wasn’t so smart. Born with the personality of a helper/doer, I couldn’t stop myself from grabbing and hauling any heavy box that was needed somewhere.

Well, after a week of this, my back was in huge pain. I was bent over, couldn’t sleep, and was crying in the middle of the night. Then, one particularly painful night, my sweet husband said: “Get your slippers on. I’m taking you to Emergency!”

Everyone there was kind. They immediately put me in a wheelchair and rolled me into a room where I was met by a Physician Assistant who interviewed me on the causes of pain, then palpated my back to find the exact problem area. She brought me two different pain medicines to take immediately, then the doctor came in and injected a strong steroid into my lower back area. They both gave me clear instructions on how to follow up over the next week. Then I was wheeled back out to the car and Robert drove me home. Again, I was crying, but this time it was tears of RELIEF! I felt no pain for the first time in a week!

For the next few days, I was dizzy and confused about the medicine’s side effects but felt so supported by everyone. My doctor gave me an Acupuncture treatment. My Yoga teacher spent a whole class hour giving me a special Acupressure and Essential Oils treatment, while, at the same time, guiding the class through yoga movement. My classmates there were so supportive and most hugged and wished me well after class.

April 30, 2023: Onwards . . . carpeting is done. Whew! Now we just have to unpack all the boxes, find our toothbrushes and shoes again, and practice “LETTING GO”. It feels good, actually to “lighten up”. It might take us a month to finish the job and that’s OK. My back is slowly getting stronger. I’m off all pain meds and I am able to hike, bike, do yoga, and all the physical stuff I’m used to . . . just slowly and carefully, but I don’t HAUL AND LIFT! Jenny and Zayden are coming to help with that. Oh, Bless Them!

So today a gorgeous Spring is exploding in our Colorado mountains. A brilliant blue sky with tufts of bright green peeking up from the soft brown earth. The birds are singing: “Here I am . . . a handsome male looking for a mate.” The owl calls: “Who’s awake? Me too.” (Can you tell I’ve been studying bird calls lately?)  I took a “BREAK DAY” and went to Cheyenne Mountain Zoo to relax and get some special animal love.

May 8, 2023   Okay, here’s the final part of this letter. I do hope it hasn’t been too long, but I couldn’t say goodbye without sharing this last adventure.  I just returned from a Trail Crew Leader Training in the mountains near Evergreen, CO. It was a two-day course to teach nature enthusiasts how to lead volunteers in building effective, safe, and environmentally friendly trails through back-country wilderness.

Three of us attended from our Trail Crew in Green Mtn. Falls, and I traveled and camped with an old friend, Doug, who’s family I lived next door to in MANITOU SPRINGS . . . probably ten years ago.Oh, it was a strenuous, exciting, and amazing adventure! We learned exactly how to read the environment (water runoff, rocks, gravel, slope lines), how to safely carry and use all manner of tools with weird names like Pickmadox, Pulaski, McCleod, and how to care for the safety of a volunteer crew while teaching them how to build a trail. My back is better, but I was very careful with the lifting, carrying, hoeing, and raking. Still, our trainers supported and encouraged us, and taught us so much! As well as physical, the course was quite mentally challenging as we practiced taking the group through the steps of safety and trail building . . . such as “CUSS” . . . Carry Use Store, and Safety in the use of tools with those unusual names.

The climate in those northern mountains was beautiful throughout the day and then dropped to just above zero degrees during the nights. The hard part for me on the trip was shivering and shaking through the whole first night in my tent . . . under a gorgeous huge full red moon. Then, the next day, as the group heard about my discomfort, people loaned me sleeping bags, blankets, and ground pads. I was so warm and cozy the next night, I SLEPT LIKE A LOG! Whew!

Well, now, I’m home, cuddling with my sweet, supportive husband, watching and listening to the spring birds sing through beautiful, bright Colorado days.Kathleen and Robert

Thank you for reading and, I hope, enjoying this newsletter. I do love staying in touch.

Yes, I’m still offering treatments in Craniosacral, Lymphatic, Essential Oils, and various other bodywork therapies on Fridays at my home in Green Mountain Falls, Colorado. and am loving seeing all of my old friends and clients.

Thank to my friend and our Mayor, Todd Dicksen, I am now officially licensed to work in this town. So I look forward to seeing those who show up for a treatment.

I’m not great at immediate online connection, so people usually just call or text me at 719-684-0112.

Springtime Smiles

Dearest Friends and Family,

I know it’s been a while since our last communication. Gosh, Spring/Life seems to be flying by, and I’ve not been keeping up well. But I want all my local friends to know . . .

I’M NOT RETIRED . . . I’M STILL DOING TREATMENTS All DAY on FRIDAYS!

You see, I love you, my Clients and Friends, and I’m not ready to say goodbye.

In late February, I went skiing with a group of friends at Monarch Ski Resort. It was a beautiful day. The sun was shining and the snow was a bit icy. I caught an edge, went flying and landed badly.

I understand that the word got out about the shoulder I broke while skiing, and everyone assumed I couldn’t do my work . . . BUT I CAN! With the help of my Doctor, my Physical Therapist, and several other therapists, the shoulder is healing very nicely. Thank you all for your concern.

If you’d like to schedule a session, I’d love to see you! Don’t let money stand in the way — I still happily accept donations.

Now, with the Doctor’s permission, I’ve been able to bike ride with the Manitou Spokes group twice in the last two weeks and it’s been fine. Whoohoo!

A couple of other friends who have been injured showed up for the bike ride, but couldn’t ride this time.

So ON we go . . .

Spring is exploding here in Green Mountain Falls. We are experiencing some interesting weather with bright sunshine one day and the next, it’s cloudy, then the next, sunshine, and the next, clouds. Yes, we need more rain/snow, but it’s so BELLISIMO (Spanish for very beautiful). The wild Pasque Flowers are blooming and the daffodils are coming up in some gardens in Colorado Springs!

The wind is a bit crazy, but it comes and goes. There seems to be a lot of fear about climate change, but I watch our trees and wild plants doing okay. It’s always “one day at a time” isn’t it?

Our president and the government right now are attracting a lot of attention, anger, and fear with the changes they/he are making. Despite the multiple messages and requests they send me, I’ve found it best to step back and stay out of the fighting. Yes, I’m going to vote, for sure, but I don’t need to convince others to vote the same way I do. At eighty-three years old I don’t feel the need to fight any more. Thank God I live in a still-free country.

  And life goes ON . . .

Everyone wants to know how my dear husband, Robert, is doing. Well, at ninety-one years his body is definitely changing. We’re all going to have the experience of AGING. Let’s prepare for it. Robert’s condition is teaching me a lot.

Robert and I don’t want to leave our beautiful and community in the mountains to go to a Senior Living Center. So, we have a dedicated Caregiver who comes three mornings a week . . . and is willing to come more when we need it. She helps him in many ways at the house and takes him wherever he needs to go, including doctor appointments. She encourages and cheers him with PT exercises and gets him up and walking as much as possible. We’re so grateful to her.

Then I do what I can on the days she’s not here. It’s my SEVA (Hindi for service with love). And its my honor.

On we go . . . one day at a time!

Now, let’s play the “Smile At Each Other Game” every day and SMILE at everyone we pass and see what happens.

Wishing you warmth, health, and peace as we move through this new year.

Winds of Change and a Fresh Start Jan 2026

Well, here we are in a brand-new year! I hope your holidays were full of joy, love, and maybe a few sweet indulgences. How was your holiday?
Ours was warm and fun with family — and yes, I ate too much! So now I’m back on a gentle Cleansing Diet to regain balance and energy. It feels good to start the year lighter and more refreshed.
Just before the Holidays, I got celebrated by hiking friends for my 83rd birthday! We had a lovely lunch together after hiking on a lovely sunny day. There were three Sagittarians who all had a birthday within a few days of each other. What Fun!
We’ve had such *interesting* weather lately — warm sunshine one day, little sun the next, and wild winds in between! Sometimes I wonder if Mother Nature is showing us just how real climate change has become. Still, I’m grateful for the beauty of each day and the chance to step outside and breathe it all in.
And now look at the weather! Snow, beautiful white deep snow everywhere. People are hunkered in. The temperature is below freezing. The poet calls it “a warm of blanket of love on the earth.”
My daughter Shawna has left, and we deeply miss her. She changed our lives in so many wonderful ways. She and Robert’s daughter, Jenny, have been helping us go through our “stuff” — and our finances too — simplifying everything as we gently ease into our later years. What a gift it has been to share that time together. She brought fun and adventure into every day.
Did I mention before that I am now volunteering at our new Horse Rescue Ranch in Green Mountain Falls? I try to go two to three days a week to get my “horse love.” We feed, water, blanket, and love on them whenever we get to groom them. Of course, we always have to muck their stalls, pens and pastures of poop. This work is perfect for me as a double Sagittarius which is symbolized by a horse. This work feeds my soul and brings me joy.
So now the Holidays are over and I’m continuing my healing work, one day a week. I am back to enjoying time with all my client/friends on Fridays. My hands still remember how to help others through Craniosacral, Lymphatic/Immune System support, Polarity, Deep Tissue, Essential Oils, and Massage. It’s deeply rewarding work, and I’m grateful I can still offer it.
If you’d like to schedule a session, I’d love to see you! Don’t let money stand in the way — I still happily accept donations.
Wishing you warmth, health, and peace as we move through this new year.

time to have Fun, and Times to Stop and Breathe

Dearest Friends and Family,

Once in awhile there comes a time in our lives when it feels like our world turns upside down. Things feel a little strange and wonky! In these times, it’s so easy for our confidence to sag, our hearts to give up, our breath to gasp, and sleep to slip away. Learning to settle into the changes and to recognize the amazing gift of adaptability is a gift I can appreciate more as time goes on.

This past season of life has been one of the most learning seasons for me. Here in this time, when my body wants to cramp and my brain gets so crazy, I was forced to stop and breathe. Only that helped.

Stop. And. Breathe

My counselor, Susan, says, “Slowing down is being inside yourself. Our peace and calm is below the noise of our emotions and desires.”

And now a beautiful bird sails over my head and I wonder . . . what’s his true life? Does he worry?

The answer came clearly. No, he doesn’t worry. He just flies moment to the next.

So onward . . .

My daughter Shawna has now moved into one of our downstairs rooms. Then, immediately, our first amazing excursion was four days of biking and hiking in Basalt, Colorado. It was put together by two fun guys in my local bike club.

We first biked all the way up and down a mountain called Maroon Bells. At the top, some of us hiked further up and around a beautiful mountain lake there. Then, of course, there was the down, down, down . . . at high speed! I was so grateful for my eBike and good brakes! A dear friend loaned us an eBike for Shawna and we were still learning how to use it. We hadn’t charged it properly, and she almost ran out of power going up. But that’s part of the adventure, right? The next day we rode for 40 miles, out and back along a beautiful mountain river trail.

Meantime, Shawna, being the competent online person that she is, booked us for a deeply relaxing hot water soak at Iron Mountain Hot Springs at the end of the day.

Then, on our last day we went rafting with a group, down Roaring Forks River. Oh, we were pooped but happy as we drove home to Green Mtn. Falls.

Robert’s daughter, Jenny, had picked him up to stay with her for those four days. Then we all met, in Colorado Springs after our trip, and attended Circus Of The Night at the Millibo Art Theater.

That’s a lot! Hmmm, no wonder I’m feeling “wonky.

Once we were all completely home, working to catch up with commitments postponed from week before, it was time to move Shawna completely & carefully into our downstairs (and move me and stuff out).

No worries, we have an agreement that 1 day a week (Fridays), she takes her computer workstation upstairs, and I can do treatments downstairs all day. Such a deal, huh? It’s been so fun having her here, and she plans to make it her home base til Januaryish.

WHOOPEE! SO I’M STILL DOING TREATMENTS BECAUSE I LOVE TO AND I LOVE MY PEOPLE!

Again onward . . . People keep asking, “When are you moving?” and “How is Robert doing?”

We don’t know when we’re moving. We’re so comfortable in our home and Robert, though his body is feeling weaker, he’s so comfortable here and his mind is as sharp as ever. We haven’t heard from Mackensie Place, so we’ll reach out as our lives settle a bit more.

Well, that’s it for now. I’m so happy to stay in touch with all of you through this newsletter. It’s a big THANK YOU to my old friend Julia Wright who helps me get it out every couple months

Happy Spring Rainy Days

SPRING IS SPRUNG!! Isn’t it beautiful? It’s a wild time with gardens/yards needing to be revived . . . with greens coming out everywhere. I found more favorite plants at the nursery and then needed to get them in the ground at just the right time. Then, of course there’s watering and more watering (though, this week God has been doing a lot of that job=Rain). Of course that must be followed with Deer Repellant on everything. These hungry, beautiful deer would love to eat all my favorite plants! But then you look up at the trees . . . the GREEN expanding in all directions, and you feel your heart expand with nature.
Everywhere around me, friends are planning or leaving for exciting trips. And my spring/summer events are launching. The Hiking Group and Biking Club, are meeting and we are taking trips together. The Friends of Ute Pass Trails (FOUPT) is getting started on summer trail repair. Then there’s artist gatherings and special, exciting events like GREEN BOX FESTIVAL.
If you haven’t been to this amazing Green Mountain. Falls celebration, I can tell you . . . it will KNOCK YOUR SOCKS OFF! Artists, dancers, musicians, and teachers of many different programs are brought in from all over the country/world to sponsor programs for all ages including art, dance, cooking, bird watching, Kid’s Camps. Then there are also many different Health and Wellness classes, like yoga, Fitness Court training, Zumba in the water, hikes, and bike tours. It runs on and on for two whole weeks: Friday, June 27, until Saturday, July 12th. Hope to see you locals there so we can play together. Go online to greenboxarts.org or call the office: 719-465-3065×2.
Many of you knew about my recent “Court Adventure” and have been asking how it went. It all started this last January, when a lady, walking in a King Soopers’ parking lot, bashed into the back of my car, and accused me of “speeding and hitting her in a crosswalk”. Neither accusation was true. I have spent hours and days looking for a lawyer I could afford to fight for me in court. (They were all upwards of $3000.)
When I talked to the Police Officer on duty at King Soopers the next day, he told me that they had many homeless type people in that parking lot and events like mine had happened before when people needed money and caused someone to have to pay them for some reason. I finally went to my court date just last week and told them my story.
They had me meet with an Executive Attorney there, who interviewed me deeply.
The finale was: they offered a Discounted Fine payment of $250 and then, they would DROP THE CASE WITH THE LADY! So, I did it! What an educating experience! I never knew the Legal System before. Anyway, it’s over, and I learned a lot.
So I took a break from all this drama and had a fun time at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. A giraffe gave a kiss and made me smile. I enjoyed seeing the meerkats playing together. Plus so many other creatures enjoying a beautiful sunny day.
SO, ONWARD! I’m happy to announce that I got in all my required hours of education with wonderful teachers like, Jennifer Song, Past President of the Craniosacral Association, and Gary Peterson, long time teacher of Craniosacral and many other therapies. I’m now re-certified with BCTA; Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy Association, and ABMP; American Bodywork and Massage Professionals.
I’m still offering treatments: Craniosacral, Lymphatic, Essential Oils, and Massage, one day a week, Fridays, at our home in Green Mountain Falls.  Yes, we’ll still be moving into Senior Housing; MacKensie Place, but we told them: “Not until Fall”. We love our home here and don’t want to leave it as long as Robert can still get around. He even went for an outdoor walk with me today. The time is coming when he’ll need more help than I can manage, but right now . . . WE’RE HERE IN GREEN MOUNTAIN FALLS!
When we do move, we will still keep the house until his time comes to “Pass On”, then his children will inherit the house. Until then, I’ll keep doing treatments here on Fridays, and will be able to stay in touch with our beloved little town.
And I have some GREAT NEWS . . . My daughter, Shawna, is coming to stay with us for a while. She needs a Homebase from all her world traveling, and, I think, she is feeling like she’d like to help us through this major transition coming up. I’M SO EXCITED, AND ROBERT IS TOO! She’ll live mostly downstairs, but on Friday/Client Day, she’s taking her online work upstairs.
It’s forcing me to pack and get my stuff out of the downstairs bedroom . . . which has been my hangout for six years. It’s the perfect incentive to get me packing the house.
So, that’s it for now.  It’s been awhile. I do want to stay in touch my newsletter and these posts are my 82-year-old, old fashioned way of doing it. I love it when you read and respond.
2025 Tune Up Day is still happening!
But please notice there are some changes to First Friday Tune-Up dates, as they are not all on the 1st Friday of a couple of months this year.

Bonding with the Natural World

Well, I’m back again . . . this time from an awesome eleven-day trip to Baja Sur with eight other ladies and our tour leader, Judith Piazza.

So let me share with you about what I call this special “Bonding With the Natural World”. Several months ago, my Drum teacher, neighbor, and friend, Judith, started putting together this trip to Baja, and invited friends to join her. I WAS INTERESTED! Then, another friend, Liza, decided to go . . . we decided to be roommates, and she and her husband thankfully put together all our travel arrangements. It was so easy and relaxing for me!

Lisa and I arrived at the Cabo San Lucus airport where we connected with the other ladies. Judith, who had gone earlier, showed up with a driver and van and off we went to a lovely apartment on the beach in town. After a night of relaxing, we headed north on the peninsula to a smallish town, Todos Santos and the “bonding” adventures began.

First, we hiked and explored around and enjoying great meals with our cook, Abraham, who put together fun, delicious, vegetarian treats for me. We visited museums, hiked and kayaked at the beach, and shopped and bought Mexican/handmade goodies. The local people were so helpful and nice to us.

Then Judith introduced us to the Turtle Sanctuary there, where we would spend our final day volunteering to rescue many baby turtles trying to make their way from their nests on the beach, down to the ocean water. Nowadays there are so many wild dogs, pelicans, and other animals that have been killing and eating the baby turtles as they make that journey, that they now need protection to make it safely. The Turtle Sanctuary is family-run and every hatching season they invite volunteers to show up, gently lift the turtle hatchlings from their nest, two feet down in the sand. We put them into tubs of wet sand for them to roll, and twist, and strengthen their new muscles for a few hours.

When we knew they were strong enough, we set them on the sand a few yards above the waves. They heard the waves, knew exactly what to do, and started scrambling towards the water. One could almost hear their sigh of relief as the water scooped them into their homeland.

Whew! Well, first we have other adventures ahead. So, after meeting the turtles that we would come back to, the next day we drove to La Paz, and boated out to a beautiful island called Ispiritu Santo. We were met by a great tour company with guides: Sabastian (a geologist), and Cesar. The beach front was covered with warm cozy tents, a cooking and eating facility, an outhouse and a shower room . . . and about 10 kayaks . . . all set up by the Team. The head cook, Abraham, was there and continued to make me yummy vegetarian meals.

While there we all put on scuba suits, snorkeling gear, and boated out to another part of the island where there were Sea Lions all over the rocks. As we got in the water the young ones were fascinated by us, started jumping off the rocks into the ocean and were swimming all around us, rolling over, almost brushing against us! They were not afraid of humans at all.

Meantime, the pelicans were dive bombing into the water to catch fish and swimming all around us. And the rare blue footed boobies flew by us to our delight.

One afternoon Sabastian and Cesar took us on a trail into the desert cactus . . . teaching us all about the different cactus and how they grow . . . sometimes even on top of each other.

So, on the next day we all jumped onto a small boat and headed for a nearby Bay that was well known for WHALE ACTIVITY. What an experience! The Grey Whales first checked us out by leaping, nose up, into the air with their eyes wide and looking at us. Then they flipped their tails and soon felt safe enough to swim right up to our boat. One of them even got close enough for Lisa to pet his forehead! Can you imagine?

This whole trip was such a deeply bonding experience . . . with all the animals, with each other, with NATURE!  If it interests you, Judith is organizing a similar tour next year at this time. Her contact is: Judithpiazza@gmail .com

While I was gone, Robert spent a lovely bit of time at his daughter Jenny’s home in Elizabeth. Then his son, Paul, flew in from California and brought him home to Green Mountain Falls. After a few days of them visiting, I arrived home on February 11 to find Robert a happy man because of all the special time with his kids. Oh, I’m so grateful to all of them for their support of my trip to Baja.

So, I got back home and reconnected with my great, supportive husband to do some fun things together. We had dinner and then sat by the fireplace with his cousins, celebrating his 90th Birthday!

Recently we attended an event at a Senior Living Center called MacKenzie Place. So here’s a shocker for us, family and friends, and everyone who’s known us for these many years. As Robert’s strength is getting weaker, and at the suggestion of his daughter, we put a deposit down for an independent living apartment at MacKenzie Place. WE WILL BE MOVING sometime in the next eight to ten months when something comes available!   TAKE A DEEP BREATH!  We are . . . one step at a time.  We will hold onto Robert’s house so I will have a place to continue Friday treatments.  This will help slow things down with all the furniture and “stuff” that will need to be moved sometime in the future.

A week later, for celebrating Carnivale in Manitou Springs, I joined my biking friends at the Buffalo Lodge. We rode up Manitou Avenue among the wildly costumed crowd along with many other parade participants. It was so much fun!

Life is such an adventure, isn’t it? You never know what’s coming next. I’ve been reading a great book by my old friend, John Chitty, called “YIN AND YANG” referring to the ups and downs of life and how to be with them. Basically, its about BEING POSITIVE and he offers multiple tools from famous teachers on how to do that.

It ain’t easy! Right? But it’s doable!

I’m so enjoying reconnecting with friends when they come in on my Fridays for treatments. Maybe you need to make an appointment so we can reconnect again.

Thank you, Everyone, for your support and friendship.
